Description
Green Chromis, Chromis viridis, also go by the name Blue Green Damselfish. These fish are popular thanks to their relatively peaceful nature. They also make a great schooling fish so they can be mesmerising to watch in a large group. As well as making them an ideal dither fish.
These Chromis are vibrant, reflective green colour. Their silvery underbelly accents this shade. They also have a rounded body shape and a forked tail.
Green Chromis, Chromis viridis, Ecology:
These fish occur in the Indo-Pacific, around East Africa, the Line Islands, Ryukyu Islands, the Great Barrier Reef and New Caledonia. They prefer calm waters on subtidal reef flats and lagoons. They often swim in schools near coral formations, using the structures as cover. Here they feed mainly on plankton.
Breeding occurs over sand and rubble. Male Green Chromis will create a nest for the demersal eggs to rest in. Their eggs are demersal and adhere to the substrate. He will ventilate the eggs with his caudal fin and eat any that do not hatch.
Blue Green Damselfish In the Aquarium:
Green Chromis are omnivores and do best when fed an enriched and varied diet. They will eat a wide variety of food, including flake and pellet.
These fish will eat frozen mysis as well as frozen brineshrimp. We enrich all our frozen food with garlic and vitamins. These are great for keeping fish healthy by providing them with the nutrition otherwise lost in frozen food. In doing so, these additives support their immune system and increase longevity.
Green Chromis will also accept live food such and copepods and brineshrimp. These can be cultivated in an attached refugium. We adapt all our Chromis to aquarium life before they leave us. We focus on their health. Most are eating a good quality flake or pellet before being offered for sale.
