Description
True Mexican Turbo Snail
These Mexican turbos or Turbo fluctuosa are great saltwater snails for getting rid of nuisance algae’s including hair algae. The Mexican Turbo Snail is native to the Gulf of California off the coast of Mexico. There are many similar looking snails from other parts of the world that are offered for sale as Mexican’s. They might seem like a bargain but alas they do not eat hair algae. So if you want a snail to control hair algae the true Mexican turbo snail is your best choice. This snail is also quite hardy compared to many other species and they will do well in a home reef. Turbo fluctuosa do however need plenty of food so if the aquarium is looking free from algae you must feed them. Good supplement foods include vegetable based pellets such as Ocean Nutrition Formula 2.
Mexican Turbo Snail water parameters
As with all reef inhabitants the water should resemble nature as closely as possible. So monitor water parameters always and adjust when needed. This snail and many other marine tank inhabitants will suffer with low Ph, Calcium Kh etc and the same goes for high Phosphates or nitrates. Do not buy this snail to control algae if your water parameters aren’t good address the water issues first.
Mexican Turbo Snail Reef tank suitability:
Yes totally reef safe. Mexican turbos will not damage corals and are a tremendous scavenger. The are mostly nocturnal and will happily graze on nuisance hair algae all through the night. This snail can also right itself if it falls, a lot of snails struggle to do this which leaves them venerable to attack from tankmates.
CAUTION
Please do not as suggested by some introduce these creatures as aquarium start up animals they will starve in most new set ups. Wait until there is food, algae for them to graze. This advice although sadly all to common is stupid and cruel.
