Description

The Pincushion Urchin, a member of the Acanthuridae family, shares its classification with other ray-finned fish such as Sawtails and Surgeonfish. The Acanthuridae family is characterized by the presence of specialized scalpels or spines positioned on both sides of the caudal peduncle. These spines serve as a defense mechanism and are often adorned with vibrant colors to act as a deterrent. Notably, Pincushion Urchins exhibit their unique adaptations through their spines.

This species also falls under the subfamily Nasinae, which exclusively encompasses members of the Naso genus. These remarkable creatures feature up to two forward-hooked spines on each side of their caudal peduncle, with the number varying based on the fish’s age. Additionally, Sawtails develop keels as they mature, potentially displaying up to seven keels. The weaponry of both these groups remains fixed in position. It’s noteworthy that only members of the Acanthurinae Subfamily possess retractable spines. Pincushion Urchins exhibit a single pair of spines that can be erected through tail curving.

Ecology:

In their natural habitat, Pincushion Urchins thrive in reef flats and coastal areas across the Indian Ocean and Western Pacific regions. These intriguing creatures often form small groups, finding their homes in locales such as Indonesia, South Africa, and Durban.

Aquarium Care:

To replicate their natural habitat, it’s essential to provide sufficient hiding spots and crevices for Pincushion Urchins in the aquarium environment. Incorporating features like Aquaroche and Aquaroche shelves can help establish their territories, while using a jump guard can prevent unintended escapes.

Diet:

A varied diet is vital for the well-being of Pincushion Urchins. Offering high-quality pellet and flake foods, such as Jbl Maris, is a crucial aspect of their nutrition. These urchins can also benefit from ocean nutrition seaweed secured to the tank’s sides using clips. Enriched frozen foods, including mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and krill, are eagerly consumed. The addition of seachem garlic guard and Atvitol vitamins to frozen food supports the urchins’ overall health, boosts their immune systems, and helps ward off white spot.

Social Behavior and Care:

Pincushion Urchins can be comfortably housed either individually or in groups. For those considering group arrangements, seeking advice from experts is recommended to ensure their well-being and compatibility.

Please note that the images provided are for illustrative purposes only, and the actual appearance, coloration, and patterns of the urchins you receive may vary.
