Description

The Red Scallop, scientifically known as Naso rubri, belongs to the Acanthuridae family, a group of ray-finned fish that also includes species like Sawtails and Surgeonfish. What defines the Acanthuridae family is the presence of specialized scalpels or spines on both sides of their caudal peduncle, serving as a defense mechanism. These unique structures are often brightly colored to deter potential predators. The Red Scallop, much like its relatives, showcases vibrant red spines that catch the eye.

This fascinating species also falls within the subfamily Nasinae, exclusively comprising members of the Naso genus. One of the distinctive features of these fish is the presence of up to two forward-hooked spines on each side of their caudal peduncle, with the number varying based on the fish’s age. As the name suggests, Sawtails within this group develop keels as they age, sometimes possessing as many as seven. Unlike their fixed counterparts in other groups, the Acanthurinae Subfamily possesses retractable spines. In this case, the Tangs in this subfamily, like the Red Scallop, wield a single pair of spines that they can erect by curving their tails.

Red Scallop, Naso rubri: Habitat and Distribution

In its natural habitat, the Red Scallop can be found inhabiting reef flats and coastal areas primarily in the Indian Ocean and Red Sea. These captivating fish often gather in small groups around regions such as Indonesia, South Africa, and Durban.

Red Scallop, Naso rubri: Ecological Role

On the reef, the Red Scallop fulfills an important role as an algae grazer. Similar to many Tangs, these fish contribute to maintaining the balance of algae growth. Left unchecked, algae could potentially outcompete slower-growing coral species for essential resources like space and light. The Red Scallop’s contribution is particularly valuable on shallower reefs that receive ample sunlight.

Setting Up an Aquarium for the Red Scallop

Creating an environment that mimics their natural habitat is crucial when housing Red Scallop Tangs. The inclusion of nooks and crannies allows these fish to establish their territories comfortably. Utilizing products like Aquaroche and Aquaroche shelves can provide the necessary structural complexity. To prevent any accidental escapes, considering a jump guard is advisable.

Feeding the Red Scallop, Naso rubri

To ensure the well-being of Red Scallop Tangs, a diverse diet is essential. This includes high-quality pellet and flake foods, such as Jbl Maris. Additionally, offering ocean nutrition seaweed secured to the tank’s sides with clips supplements their diet. Enriched frozen foods like mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and krill are also eagerly consumed, with the larger individuals benefitting from seachem garlic guard and Atvitol vitamins. These additives contribute to the Tangs’ overall health, boosting their immune systems and warding off potential ailments.

Social Behavior and Care

Red Scallop Tangs can be kept both individually and in groups. For those considering group arrangements, seeking guidance from experts or knowledgeable sources is recommended. While multiple tangs can coexist, seeking advice helps ensure their well-being and compatibility.
