Description

Redface Batfish (Pinnatus Batfish) – Tank Bred

Redface Batfish, also known as Pinnatus Batfish, belong to the Acanthuridae family, which also includes Sawtails and Surgeonfish. A defining characteristic of the Acanthuridae family is the presence of scalpels or spines on both sides of the caudal peduncle. These spines are used for defense and are usually brightly colored to act as a deterrent. Redface Batfish have these distinct spines.

These batfish also belong to the subfamily Nasinae, which is composed exclusively of members of the genus Naso. They possess up to two forward hooked spines on each side of their caudal peduncle, with the number varying based on the fish’s age. As the name suggests, Sawtails also develop keels with age, sometimes up to seven. Unlike other groups, the spines of these two are fixed in positions, as only members of the Acanthurinae Subfamily have retractable spines. Redface Batfish have a single pair of spines that they erect by curving their tail.

Redface Batfish, Pinnatus Batfish, Ecology:

These fish inhabit reef flats and coastal areas in the Indian Ocean and Western Pacific. They can be found in small groups around regions such as Indonesia, the South Africa, and the Durban area.

In their natural habitat, Redface Batfish graze on algae. Similar to many other fish in the Acanthuridae family, they play a role in controlling algae growth. Algae can outcompete slower-growing coral species for space and light if left unchecked. Their contribution is particularly significant on shallower reefs that receive more sunlight.

Elegant Batfish In the Aquarium:

Creating a natural environment with plenty of nooks and crannies is crucial for the well-being of Redface Batfish. This aids in establishing their own territories. Aquaroche and Aquaroche shelves can prove beneficial for this purpose. Additionally, it’s recommended for hobbyists to consider using a jump guard to prevent any accidental escapes.

Redface Batfish thrive on a varied diet. Their feeding regimen includes high-quality pellets and flake food, such as Jbl Maris. Seaweed from Ocean Nutrition is also provided, which can be attached to the tank’s side with clips.

They also readily consume enriched frozen foods, such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and krill—especially for larger individuals. The frozen food is enriched with Seachem Garlic Guard and Atvitol vitamins. These additives are essential for maintaining fish health and longevity. They compensate for the nutritional loss in frozen food, support the immune system, and aid in warding off health issues.

In addition, Redface Batfish will consume live foods like copepods and amphipods, which can be cultivated in an attached refugium. Prior to being offered for sale, our batfish are adapted to aquarium life and are already consuming dry and/or frozen foods.

They can be kept alone or in groups. If considering a group, we encourage you to seek advice to ensure the best care. While multiple batfish can be housed together, consulting experts can address any uncertainties or questions.

Please note that the fish pictured here are representative, and the livestock you receive may vary in pattern, coloration, and shape.
