Description

Lamark Angelfish, a type of ray-finned fish, is a member of the Acanthuridae family, which also encompasses Sawtails and Surgeonfish. The hallmark characteristic of the Acanthuridae family is the presence of sharp scalpels or spines on both sides of the caudal peduncle. These spines serve as a means of defense, often adorned with vibrant colors to act as a deterrent. In the case of the Lamark Angelfish, these features are notable.

Belonging to the subfamily Nasinae, which exclusively comprises members of the genus Naso, Lamark Angelfish possesses up to two forward-hooked spines on each side of their caudal peduncle, with the number varying according to the fish’s age. Similarly, Sawtails develop keels over time, which can extend up to seven keels. However, the weapons of both these groups remain fixed, unlike the retractable spines found in the Acanthurinae Subfamily. Lamark Angelfish, akin to the Blonde Lipstick Tang, possesses a single pair of retractable spines that it can erect by curving its tail.

**Lamark Angelfish, Genus Naso, Ecology:**

Inhabiting reef flats and coastal regions of the Indian Ocean and the Red Sea, Lamark Angelfish are often found in small groups around areas like Indonesia, South Africa, and Durban.

Within the reef ecosystem, Lamark Angelfish play a role in algae grazing. Similar to many Tangs, these fish contribute to controlling algae growth. Unchecked algae could otherwise outcompete slower-growing coral species for vital space and light. Their contribution is especially significant in shallower reefs that receive ample sunlight.

**Elegant Angelfish in the Aquarium:**

Creating an aquarium setup that replicates their natural habitat is crucial. Offering various nooks and crannies allows Lamark Angelfish to establish their own territories. Utilizing features like Aquaroche and Aquaroche shelves can facilitate this. Additionally, considering the use of a jump guard is advisable to prevent any potential losses.

Lamark Angelfish thrive on a diverse diet. High-quality pellets and flake foods, such as Jbl Maris, are recommended. They can also be offered ocean nutrition seaweed, securely attached to the tank’s side with clips. Enriched frozen foods like mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and krill, especially for larger specimens, are eagerly consumed. These frozen foods are enriched with supplements like Seachem Garlic Guard and Atvitol vitamins, essential for the fish’s health and longevity. By providing the nutrients that frozen foods might lack, these additives enhance the angelfish’s immune system and aid in combating issues like white spot.

Moreover, Lamark Angelfish are known to consume live foods, such as copepods and amphipods, which can be cultivated in an attached refugium. These angelfish are acclimated to aquarium life before being made available for purchase, often transitioning to dry or frozen foods.

Lamark Angelfish can be housed individually or in groups. For those interested in maintaining a group, seeking advice is recommended. Hosting multiple Lamark Angelfish can be considered, though consulting experts can help address uncertainties and inquiries.

Please note that the fish depicted are representative examples, and the live specimens you receive may vary in terms of pattern, coloration, and physique.
