Description

The Saddleback Butterflyfish belongs to the Acanthuridae family, a group of ray-finned fish that also includes Sawtails and Surgeonfish. A distinct characteristic of this family is the presence of scalpels or spines on both sides of the caudal peduncle, which serve as a defense mechanism and are often brightly colored to deter potential threats. In line with this characteristic, Blonde Lipstick Tangs are known for their vivid orange spines.

Within the Acanthuridae family, the Blonde Lipstick Tangs are categorized under the subfamily Nasinae. This subgroup is exclusively composed of members of the genus Naso. These fish possess up to two forward-hooked spines on each side of their caudal peduncle, with the number varying based on the fish’s age. Like Sawtails, keels also develop as the fish matures, and they can have up to seven keels. Notably, the retractable spines found in the Acanthurinae Subfamily are absent in these species. Instead, these butterflyfish have a fixed pair of spines that they can erect by curving their tail.

Originating from the Indo-Pacific region, including the Red Sea, the Saddleback Butterflyfish is commonly found in reef flats and coastal areas. Similar to other tangs, these fish play a role in controlling algae growth on reefs, which prevents algae from overpowering slower-growing coral species for essential light and space. Their contribution is particularly valuable in shallower reefs that receive higher sunlight exposure.

In an aquarium setting, creating an environment that mimics their natural habitat is crucial. This involves providing ample hiding spots and crevices to allow the Saddleback Butterflyfish to establish its territory. Options such as Aquaroche and Aquaroche shelves can be beneficial for this purpose. To prevent any potential losses, hobbyists are encouraged to use a jump guard.

For their well-being, Saddleback Butterflyfish should be provided with a diverse diet, including high-quality pellets and flake foods like Jbl Maris. Offering ocean nutrition seaweed that can be secured to the tank’s side using clips is also recommended. Enriched frozen foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and krill, supplemented with seachem garlic guard and Atvitol vitamins, are essential for maintaining their health. These additives support their immune system and help prevent ailments. Additionally, these butterflyfish consume live foods like copepods and amphipods, which can be cultivated in an attached refugium.

Whether kept individually or in groups, Saddleback Butterflyfish can thrive in aquariums. Introducing multiple tangs is also possible, but seeking advice, especially if uncertainties arise, is recommended.
